Maurizio M. Malimpensa Awarded a New Research Grant

Italian philosopher and theologian Maurizio M. Malimpensa, a member of the TRIERTIUM Research Group, has received financial support for his project “Logic of the Image: Towards a Non-Formal Logic of Life within the Framework of Trinitarian Ontology” in the fifth year of the prestigious Junior Grant Competition at Palacký University.

What will he be working on in Olomouc in 2026-2028?

“My project seeks to develop a transcendental logic of the image. Following my previous research (Malimpensa 2019, 2020, 2024) and a tradition of distinguished scholars (e.g. Drechsler 1955, Janke 1993, Siemek 2001, Schnell/Kuneš 2016), I argue that this intention is already present in Fichte’s conception of the Wissenschaftslehre; accordingly, the project begins with an analysis of Fichte’s work to determine the reasons why it can fundamentally be understood as a theory of the image, in a speculative sense. The project will combine systematic philosophical analysis, historical-conceptual reconstruction, and textual interpretation. Through close readings of Fichte’s texts and of key theological and philosophical sources, I aim to uncover both the internal logic of the image-concept and the broader speculative-theological framework in which it is embedded. The method is thus deliberately twofold: it articulates an original systematic account while reconstructing the historical conditions of its emergence and transformation. By briefly surveying the most significant analogous attempts both before and after Fichte, the project situates itself within contemporary philosophical debates and advances an original account of a logic of the image. Drawing on the theological and speculative core of this foundational idea, I aim to articulate its practical and existential implications, thereby opening the way to a new humanism—one that, in response to today’s challenges, embraces the ambitious task of rethinking thought itself in light of the project of the Trinitarian Ontology. The goal is to open a path toward a non-neutral, non-formal foundation for philosophical thinking, in dialogue with the Christian theological tradition.”

In addition to a series of scholarly articles and a new monograph in the Studies on Triadic Ontology and Trinitarian Philosophy book series (Studies on Triadic Ontology and Trinitarian Philosophy), we will organize the second TRIERTIUM Conference in 2027. Details will be announced in due course.
