The centenary of Karel Floss’s birth (1926–2024) is marked by a new special issue of Filosofický časopis (2/2026), Karel Floss: Philosopher – Bridge Builder. It is edited by Tomáš Nejeschleba and Eduard Fiedler (Palacký University Olomouc). The volume is the first attempt to assess Floss’s contribution to philosophy in a more systematic way. Throughout his life, Floss worked to connect different intellectual traditions: Thomism, triadic and Trinitarian thought, J. L. Fischer’s “structural” philosophy, ecumenism, and the Christian–Marxist dialogue. He passed these impulses on to generations of philosophy students in Olomouc and to participants of the Summer Philosophical School in Sázava, which he founded.
The issue opens with Nature and Thinking (Přirozenost a myšlení), Floss’s last text, previously unpublished, which he co-wrote with his student Eduard Fiedler. It also contains the following studies:
- Lenka Karfíková: Temporality and Triadic Ontology: On Karel Floss’s Book “Time, Historicity and Aurelius Augustine”
- Petr Pavlas: Defensio Trinitatis: Karel Floss and Maria Rosa Antognazza on the Trinitarian Theology of Comenius and Leibniz
- Dalimil Ševčík: Thinking in Chords
- Petr Macek: Karel Floss and the Neo-Thomism of Metoděj Habáň: Philosophy of History as a Coming to Terms with the Neo-Thomist System
- Tomáš Nejeschleba: Why Read Josef Ludvík Fischer? Karel Floss and Structural Philosophy
- Michael Hauser: Socialism as the Fire of the Holy Spirit: On the Political Philosophy of Karel Floss
For the TRIERTIUM community, the contributions on triadism and Trinitarian thought will be of particular interest. Floss’s triadic thinking is one of the genuin Czech roots of the relational and Trinitarian ontology the project explores.
